Chapter Five
When Dimitri had bent over Alpha Montblanc to look him over, it had been more out of guilt than anything else. Intellectually, he had known this disaster hadn't been his fault, but at some level, he'd believed that somehow, if he'd been here, he might have managed to help.
It was a stupid, arrogant thought to have. An entire pack of werewolves had guarded Mirian, Mercury and the others. Compared to that, what could one man—a Bearer though he might be—possibly do?
He'd still done his best to tend to Alpha Montblanc, even if he'd realized all too well it was futile.
The werewolf had a great deal of injuries. Most seemed to have been made by a knife of sorts, or perhaps a bigger blade. Some wounds looked jagged—a serrated edge, perhaps. Normal knives couldn't hurt werewolves, so maybe something made out of silver? It was a peculiar choice—he'd have rather expected bullets as the cause of death. Knives weren't practical to fight werewolves, simply because they involved close combat, and close combat with a shifter was not a good idea. But apparently, this time around, whoever had come to kidnap the Bearers had not found a werewolf Alpha's abilities an impediment.
Dimitri distantly wondered if perhaps, he would not be better off checking on the other people. He knew they were dead too—even from his standpoint, the damage was visible for most of them, and Elliot had checked them over before he'd left. But still... There had to be something he could do. For someone, for anyone. He stayed where he was, still kneeling next to Powell Montblanc's motionless form.
Somewhere behind him, Dimitri heard the sound of rushing footsteps approaching. Roman whined low in his throat, and then finally stepped away from his father.
A man Dimitri didn't know let out a choked noise. "Oh, dear God."
"What... What happened here?" another asked.
Roman shifted into his two-legged form. "That's what I'd like to know. Why wasn't this wing of the house being properly watched?"
After that, things grew a little blurry for Dimitri. A part of him always remained focused on Elliot, because he was very aware that his mate had gone after the attackers all alone.
He wanted to remind Roman of it, to tell him to send Elliot some help, but the words never came out. Something else did. He wished he wasn't so useless, wished he could have helped—and in that moment, his entire sense of self shifted and became focused on that lone desire.
A surge of sudden power flashed over him, seeping into Powell Montblanc and even overflowing slightly. Dimitri couldn't hope to keep track of it. All he could think about was the need to stay calm, not to lose control more than he already had.
His muscles strained against the assault. He felt the sharp sting of the wounds digging into his own flesh. Instinctively, he latched onto his bond with Elliot.
Actually understanding the wounds helped a lot. He focused on that, on what he knew was needed to heal the injuries.
